WP_20141021_19_50_41_Pro.jpgMy achievements from the last 25 years of working at local, national and international levels to help to end and prevent domestic violence and promote gender equality include:

  • Volunteering in a refuge for young Asian women in Manchester (1989-1991)
  • Helping to bring in laws protecting domestic violence victims and their children, including the "good cause" exemption clause from the Child Support Act 1991, and the injunctions in the 1996 Family Law Act; set up a national training programme for children's workers in women's refuges in the 1990s; both whilst I was National Children's Officer at Women's Aid England (1991-1997)
  • Helping 1000s of domestic violence victims and their children to be safer by training police and social workers across the country (over the last twenty years)
  • Co-writing the nationally used domestic violence prevention toolkit "Spiralling" for use in schools helping young people to be safe in their future relationships (2007)
  • Helped to set up the Respect national quality assurance system for domestic violence perpetrator programmes (2005-8)
  • Supporting research projects with the Universities of Durham, Bristol, Manchester and London Metropolitan to measure the impact of domestic violence perpetrator programmes, in my role as Respect research manager (2008-2015)
  • Helped 100s more victims and children to be safer by working with the abuser to hold them to account and where possible change their behaviour (at DVIP, 2008-10)
  • Helped 1000s male victims to be safer by developing and co-authoring the Respect toolkit and national training programme for work with male victims of domestic violence (2nd edition 2012).

I'm delighted Labour will make sex and relationships education compulsory and have appointed a Shadow Minister for preventing violence against women and girls. I'm looking forward to being able to contribute my skills, knowledge and experience in Parliament if you elect me next May.
